Where we work in Chester
Hoole — Victorian and Edwardian terraces with long, narrow rear gardens. Two- and three-pane bi-folds, and a lot of kitchen extensions where the doors go into the new rear wall rather than the original one.
Handbridge and Curzon Park — larger period property, generous gardens, and the sort of job where a wide multi-pane run in a heritage colour is the right answer.
Upton, Newton and Vicars Cross — inter-war and post-war semis. The bread-and-butter window-to-bi-fold conversion territory.
Boughton and Great Boughton — mixed stock, and a lot of straightforward replacement work.
Saughall, Christleton, Tarvin and Waverton — village property on the city’s edge, larger plots, more bespoke specification.
Blacon and Lache — post-war housing where uPVC windows and composite front doors are more often the job than bi-folds.
Conservation areas and listed buildings
The Chester city conservation area covers the walled city and a substantial area beyond it, and there are further conservation areas across Handbridge, Curzon Park, Hoole and a number of the outlying villages.
What that means in practice:
- Rear elevations are usually where replacement glazing is acceptable, and rear elevations not visible from a public highway are the least constrained
- Front elevations in a conservation area will generally need consent for anything that changes material or style
- Listed buildings need Listed Building Consent for any alteration to windows or doors, front or back, and that’s a separate consent from planning permission
- Article 4 directions apply in parts of the city and remove permitted development rights that would otherwise let you swap like for like
We’ll tell you at survey which category you’re in. We won’t take an order for something that needs consent you haven’t got.
Building Regulations in Chester
Building Control is Cheshire West and Chester, and as a CERTASS-registered installer we self-certify and register the glazing installation with them directly — no separate application, no Building Control fee for the glazing, and your compliance certificate within about four weeks.
