Altrincham and Bowdon have some of the best Victorian and Edwardian housing in Greater Manchester, and a great deal of it has been extended, opened up and re-glazed in the last decade. It’s the sort of stock where slim frames and large panes make a visible difference.
Bowdon — large Victorian villas, much of it within the Bowdon conservation area, where permitted development rights are restricted and rear elevation work is where replacement glazing generally happens. Heritage finishes and slim steel-look aluminium windows suit this stock far better than standard profiles.
Altrincham town, Hale Road and Navigation Road — Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis, mostly with long narrow rear gardens. Two- and three-pane bi-folds, French doors, and a lot of rear extension work.
Timperley and Broadheath — inter-war and post-war semis. Bread-and-butter window-to-bi-fold conversions and uPVC replacement.
Dunham Massey and Little Bollington — rural, larger plots, conservation-sensitive.
The recurring question on Altrincham and Bowdon property is how to put modern glazing into a Victorian rear elevation without it looking bolted on. Three things make the difference:
Sightline. A slim aluminium frame reads as a window opening; a chunky one reads as a replacement. This is the whole argument for aluminium over uPVC on this stock.
Colour. Black, basalt grey and heritage greens sit against Victorian brick in a way that anthracite grey — which is a modern, slightly blue-toned colour — often doesn’t.
Bar layout. Where the original elevation had a glazing pattern, slim internal or applied bars in a matching layout keep the rhythm of the facade. It costs a little more and it’s usually the thing that makes the job.
